Dissecting a Cold Air Intake System

The cold air intake system is responsible for bringing down the temperature of air entering the engine. Its main goal is to increase the power output of the engine, allowing it to give off more horsepower and torque as well as improving the vehicle’s fuel mileage. Its secondary goal is to enhance the appearance of your engine bay and allow it to create a smooth intake noise. It works in the principle of feeding the engine with a stable supply of cooler and denser air which can be mixed with fuel for a more complete and efficient combustion. Since cooler air is denser for a certain amount of volume, the cold air intake introduces this to the hot engine bay, which greatly prevents mechanical imbalance. By allowing the engine to breathe-in colder air, during the combustion process, the air and fuel mixture is translated into a more intense explosion in the combustion chamber which results to an increased horsepower and torque output.

There are various factors to be considered in the design of the cold air intake system such as the diameter of the pipes need to be increased for better air flow, the interior of the intake must be smooth to reduce air resistance, it must provide a more direct route to the air intake, the length of the intake pipes must be tuned for maximum air flow and it must use a more efficient and less restrictive air filter.
